CHAPTER 7 — TODAY
The Brotherhood's goal is the same goal first laid out by Peter J. McGuire, the
goal that has been pursued for more than one hundred hears -- to "elevate the
conditions of all members in every way possible."
The Brotherhood is re-organizing the industry so that it sets the standards for
carpenters again. It is looking critically at every program, every department to be
sure that its mission makes sense and that its operation is based on what's most
effective for the years ahead.
Throughout North America, the UBC is developing regional councils that are
more effective in increasing the union's share of the construction market.
The union is making a transition to an organizing culture; more dues are going
toward organizing, towards bringing the unorganized into the fold. Active
organizing by Local Unions has been made a constitutional requirement.
Local Union boundaries that no longer reflect the marketplace are being
eliminated.
The Brotherhood has begun a comprehensive training program for full-time
staffers in workforce organizing and personnel skill building. The UBC is working
in cooperation with the industry and building new training facilities, to ensure that
all members have the skills needed to do the job and keep contractors
competitive.
Most members are fired up and ready. They know that in order to regain control
of the market, all members must take an active role. They are excited and
optimistic about the future.
